Chame is a small, beautiful village located in the heart of Nepal's Annapurna District, serving as the district headquarters. Chame village is renowned for its beauty, rich culture, and its status as an essential stopover on the Annapurna Circuit. The village welcomes trekking enthusiasts with warmth and stunning mountain vistas of the Himalayas. Chame is the 2nd major stop for the trekkers before heading towards the popular trekking destinations in the Annapurna region like the Annapurna circuit, Tilicho lake, North Annapurna and so on.
Chame is situated at an altitude of approximately 2,670 meters (8,760 ft) above sea level. The village follows the line of the Marsyangdi River, surrounded by dense pine forests, waterfalls, and mountain summits. The village is found in the northwestern part of Nepal, approximately 240 km north of Kathmandu, and is the last big settlement before climbing to higher elevations on the Annapurna Circuit.
Chame possesses a combination of dense forests, gorges of rivers, and beautiful hill scenery. Leading among these is the massive rock face of Paungda Danda, a curved rock face that rises over 1,500 meters and is highly revered by the locals. The village presents observers with a breathtaking panorama of the Annapurna II, Lamjung Himal, and Pisang Peak. Nearby hot springs, peaceful pine forest, and wooden bridges make it an attractive place to rest for trekkers and nature lovers.
The village is mainly populated by ethnic Gurung and Tibetan-influenced people. Their way of life is simple, nature-and-Buddhism-oriented. Chortens (Buddhist shrines), prayer wheels, and mani walls line the paths. People are engaged in farming, animal rearing, and tourism. Trekkers get to see everyday village life, traditional stone buildings, and wind-blown prayer flags.
Chame is a significant acclimatization point on the Annapurna Circuit. Trekkers will usually spend the night here before continuing to Pisang or Manang. It offers necessary amenities, safe lodging, and an adequate resting place from the demanding trail before proceeding to higher altitudes. It also happens to be the point of transition from subtropical forest regions to alpine regions.
Chame has a decent number of teahouses, guesthouses, and lodges with hygienic rooms, hot showers, and warm blankets. Some of the lodges offer Wi-Fi and charging stations, but not free of charge. There are shops that sell snacks, toiletries, trekking gear, and basic medicines. There are health posts and a small police checkpoint as well in the village.
Most of the teahouses in Chame serve Nepali and Tibetan traditional cuisine. Common dishes served are dal bhat (lentils and rice), thukpa (noodle soup), momos (dumplings), and Tibetan bread. Western food like pasta, pancakes, porridge, and eggs for breakfast can also be found. The food is simple but sustaining enough for hungry trekkers.
Mobile and Wi-Fi coverage is sparse, from the NCELL and NTC networks, but weak or unstable. Solar power and backup batteries are common for electricity. Basic items are stockpiled in some small shops, though it's best to bring along basic supplies like medicine and toiletries from Pokhara or Kathmandu.
To arrive at Chame, most trekkers drive a jeep or local bus from Besisahar the traditional start of the Annapurna Circuit. The road is off-road and bumpy, so a 4WD is recommended which can be rented from us. The journey takes around 7 to 9 hours, depending on conditions and weather. Walking from Dharapani or Timang is an alternative for some trekkers if they prefer to acclimatize gradually.
Chame has a cool mountain climate.
• There are blooming rhododendrons and clear weather in Spring (March to May).
• Autumn (September to November) is peak season, with good temperatures and excellent visibility.
• Winter (December to February) may be bitterly cold with snow, and some of the lodges may close down.
• Monsoon (June to August) has heavy rains and landslides, and it is unsafe to travel.
