Pisang Village

Pisang Village

Pisang is a stunning village in Nepal's Manang District, at about 3,300 meters (10,827 ft) elevation. It lies on the famous Annapurna Circuit and has some of the Himalayas' most spectacular scenery around it. As a trekking village, Pisang stands out in both natural beauty and cultural wealth and is a compulsory stop-point for acclimatization and exploration.

Location and Height of Pisang

Pisang is a tiny Himalayan village in Nepal's Manang District, on the popular Annapurna Circuit Trek. It lies at an elevation of approximately 3,300 meters (10,827 feet) above sea level. The village lies between pine forest and steep rocks in the Marsyangdi River Valley. Pisang is divided into two halves: Lower Pisang, by the river and additional lodges, and Upper Pisang, higher up and with improved views and a more authentic Tibetan atmosphere.

Natural Attraction and Scenic Beauty of Pisang Village

Pisang is blessed with stunning Himalayan scenery and is thus one of the most scenic destinations on the Annapurna Circuit and the Tilicho Lake Trek. The area offers a panoramic view of Annapurna II, Pisang Peak, Tilicho Peak, and other snow peaks. Pine forests covering the area, and hanging cliffs and alpine meadows, offer a peaceful and virgin environment. A short trek to Upper Pisang Monastery offers the trekkers a view point over the valley. Nature lovers also love the peace of Pisang Lake, which is within a short walk from the village.

Culture and Local Lifestyle of Pisang Village

Pisang individuals are predominantly of Gurung and Tibetan origin. They spend their day-to-day lives surrounding Buddhist culture, agriculture, and tourism. The village is adorned with mani walls, prayer flags, chortens, and a beautiful monastery at Upper Pisang with old Tibetan architectural styles. Individuals are kind and hospitable and always happy to recount experiences of life in the mountains. You'll observe rural stone houses and terraced landscapes, and you may even happen to catch a puja (prayer ceremony) in the midst of your visit.

Pisang as a Resting Place on the Annapurna Circuit

Pisang is also a key acclimatization destination on the Annapurna Circuit, which people usually visit after Chame and before heading for Manang. Trekkers commonly rest here so their bodies can acclimatize to higher elevations. This is also where trekkers must choose between two trails to Manang the Lower Pisang route (shorter, less scenic) or the Upper Pisang route (longer, higher, with grander Himalayan views). Pisang's flat top and comforts make it an ideal place to acclimatize, rest, and relax before venturing further into the high Himalayas.

Accommodation and Facilities in Pisang Village

Pisang boasts a wide range of teahouses and trekking lodges, the majority of which are located in Lower Pisang. They offer basic rooms with shared shower and toilet facilities, some of which in Upper Pisang include a little more luxury with dramatic views. Solar-heated hot showers are available in most accommodations (extra charge), woodstove dining rooms, and electricity to charge. Wi-Fi is available at some of the lodges, but the internet could be slow and patchy. Accommodation in this case is simple and functional for trekking.

Food and Local Cuisine of Pisang Village

Pisang cuisine is designed to feed trekkers and warm them up at altitude. Dal Bhat is the favorite dish, a filling meal of lentil soup, rice, and available vegetables, generally served with pickles and curry. Tibetan bread, noodle soups (thukpa), momos (dumplings), and yak cheese are other favorites. Breakfast is usually porridge, eggs, pancakes, and tea or coffee. Although the menus are universal in all the lodges, the freshness of ingredients and the courtesy of the cooks give each a unique taste.

Connectivity and Amenities in Pisang Village

Connectivity in Pisang is limited but sufficient. Electricity is available in most of the lodges in the form of solar panels or local power, and charging stations for gadgets exist in some of them. Wi-Fi is present only in a few lodges (at a small extra cost), but it is irregular. Mobile signals (especially NTC) are weak or absent. There are small local shops where trekkers can buy snacks, bottled water, tissue, and light toiletries. There is no ATM or bank, so trekkers must carry enough cash from Besisahar or Kathmandu.

How to Reach Pisang?

To reach Pisang is by one can either overland travel or trek. First, drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar (6–8 hours). Next, a jeep ride from Besisahar to Chame (6–7 hours of off-road driving). Then, overnight at Chame and a 5–6 hour trekking journey through forest, rock path, and beautiful river crossing to Pisang. There is no road to Pisang, so it is accessible by foot along the Annapurna trail. Porters and mules can also be hired to assist in carrying baggage.

Weather in Pisang

Weather in Pisang is typical high-altitude Himalayan weather. The best time to visit is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when there are clear skies, pleasant days, and cold nights. The trails are flanked by blossoming rhododendrons in spring and crisp mountain vistas and stable weather in autumn. Winters (Dec-Feb) have snowfall and extremely cold weather, with minimal lodges that remain open. Monsoon (Jun-Aug) has high rainfalls in the lower altitudes, though Pisang is dry as it is in the rain shadow.
