You will also explore and spend time at our trek's goal, Tilicho Lake, which is formed by melting glaciers on the surrounding peaks. It is the spiritual center for Buddhists and Hindus. Trekkers travel from all over the world to unwind and immerse themselves in this stunning location. The Tilicho Lake walk is less congested than other treks such as the Langtang Valley, Manaslu Circuit, ABC, and EBC treks. The teahouses are well-run local lodges that provide meals, hot baths, and genuine hospitality. Expect to see blue sheep, Himalayan tahr, snow leopards (rare), eagles, and griffons at higher altitudes. You will pass through rhododendron forests, alpine tundra, and bleak trans-Himalayan deserts. You'll get to try yak cheese, Thukpa, Tibetan bread, Marpha apple pie, and hot dal bhat.
Thorong La Pass (5,416 meters / 17,769 feet) is one of the highest trekking passes in the world and the ultimate highlight of the Annapurna Circuit Trek in Nepal. Thorong La Pass is situated between the village of Manang to the east and Muktinath to the west. This mountain pass connects the lush subtropical valleys of the Marsyangdi River with the arid landscapes of the Kali Gandaki Valley. Crossing it is considered both a challenge and a lifetime achievement for trekkers.
Thorong La Pass lies in the Damodar Himal range, a northern extension of the Annapurna massif. It is nestled between two towering peaks, Thorong Peak (6,144 m) and Yakawa Kang (6,482 m).
Thorong La Pass has long served as a traditional trade and pilgrimage route between Manang, Mustang, and Tibet. The pass leads to Muktinath (3,800 m), one of the most sacred sites for both Hindus and Buddhists. Many pilgrims cross the pass each year to visit the Muktinath temple, which symbolizes liberation and spiritual cleansing.
The Gurung and Magar communities are the local population of the Annapurna region, along with some populations of the Tibetan communities. Gurung and Magar communities stand out for their unique traditions, history, and contributions to the nation. Both groups primarily inhabit the mid-hill and Himalayan regions of western and central Nepal and are well known for their bravery, hospitality, and cultural heritage.
As people also know, Nepal is the Land of Gurkhas, which comes from the Gurung, Magar, and the Tamang communities mainly. Gurungs and Magar communities traditionally live in hillside villages, like Ghandruk, from the starting point of Annapurna to Mustang, the ending point of the Annapurna region. They have very traditionally stone-roofed houses clustered together. Agriculture, animal husbandry, and service in the military (especially the British and Indian Gurkha regiments) have long been their main occupations.
Gurungs follow both Buddhism and Hinduism, with strong influences of shamanistic practices. They celebrate festivals like Lhosar (Tamu Lhosar), marking their New Year, with traditional music, dances, and feasts.
Accommodations in the Annapurna circuit and Tilicho Lake are similar as both region lies at higher altitudes, so you will see many things in common. The accommodations are on a twin-sharing basis, which means you will need to share your room with your fellow trekkers. In the lower regions such as Besisahar, Chame, and Pisang, the teahouses are relatively well-developed, offering private rooms with twin beds, blankets, basic furniture, and attached bathrooms in some cases.
As you ascend higher into Manang, Tilicho Base Camp, and eventually Thorong Phedi, the facilities become more basic due to remoteness and limited resources. Rooms are usually small with wooden beds, thin mattresses, and shared toilets, while dining areas serve as warm communal spaces heated by a traditional stove where trekkers gather in the evenings and talk about their day with their friends or make new friends with fellow trekkers.
The foods found during the Annapurna circuit with Tilicho lake trek are local foods of the Annapurna region, which are prepared by using fire and wood, and are delicious and healthy for the trekkers. The same tea house where you will be staying serves Nepali cuisine, Tibetan-influenced meals, and simple Western dishes designed to provide trekkers with the energy needed for long days on the trail. In the lower sections, such as Besisahar, Dharapani, and Chame, the menus are quite extensive for you, as you can find rice and curry, noodles, momos (dumplings), soups, pancakes, pasta, and even pizza in some larger villages.
The most popular and nutritious option remains the classic dal bhat (lentil soup with rice, vegetables, and pickle), which is not only filling but also comes with free refills, making it the go-to meal for trekkers.
As you climb higher towards Manang, Tilicho Base Camp, and Thorong Phedi, food variety decreases, and supplies become more expensive due to transportation challenges; everything is carried by porters, mules, or yaks. Meals at high altitude usually consist of simple dishes like fried rice, Tibetan bread, boiled potatoes, porridge, noodles, and soups that are easier to digest.
Hot drinks such as ginger tea, honey lemon tea, and butter tea are common and help to keep warm in the cold mountain climate. While meat is available in some lower villages, trekkers are often advised to avoid it in higher regions since freshness cannot always be guaranteed.
If you are planning the Annapurna circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek, then you must know the trekking cost, as you will be combining two different treks in one. You will need to know permits, transport, guides/porters, teahouses, meals, flights/jeeps, gear rental, insurance, tips, and hidden extras so you can budget confidently for 2025/2026.
The first and foremost thing that you will require, and it costs, is the permits. As the Annapurna circuit and the Tilicho lake both lie inside the Annapurna region of Nepal, you will need to get the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit, which is also known as the ACAP permit by the trekkers. The ACAP permit cost is NPRS. 3000 for the foreign trekkers, and if you are from the SAARC countries, you will need to pay NPR. 2000 for the ACAP permit, and if you are a Nepali trekker and want to do the Annapurna circuit with the Tilicho Lake trek, you will need to pay NPR. 100.
Another permit that you will require is the Trekkers Information Management Permit, which is sometimes called the TIMS card. The TIMS card cost depends on some factors between Nprs. 2000 to NPRs. 3000, which depends upon the policy and whether you’re in a group/agency.
Another place where you will be spending money on is for the transportation to reach the Annapurna circuit trail head and return from Jomsom or Muktinath. If you are opting for a private vehicle from Kathmandu to Besisahar or Chame, then the cost is around NPR. 25000 per vehicle, which can be divided among the trekkers. But if you want to reach the trail head, then it costs you around NPR. 2000. After crossing Thorong La pass, you will need to return, and if you are choosing the drive from the Muktinath temple to Pokhara, then the private vehicle costs you again around Nrs. 25000 per vehicle. But if you are opting for the public vehicle, you will need to drive to Jomsom, which costs around NPR. A 1000 taxi from Jomsom to Pokhara costs around NPR. 3000 and from Pokhara to Kathmandu it costs around 1500 NPR.
As you will be trekking to the Annapurna region, where every trekking destination needs the proper guides for the trek, and if you want, you will need a porter as well. On average, the licensed trekking guide costs you around US$25–$35/day. The Porter (20–25 kg limit) costs you around US$18–$28/day. If you want to hire a guide and porter in a single person, which means Porter-guide (dual role), then it will cost you around. US$30–$40/day
The accommodations and meals during the trek cost depending upon the elevations, such as if you are on the lower elevations, then the food and stays might be cheaper than the higher altitudes. The Rooms start with the price of NPR 500–1,500 per night (higher at Tilicho High Camp/around Thorong Phedi, which is sometimes NPRS. 2000 to Nprs. 3000). If you are having food, then it costs you around NPR 2,000–4,000/day (prices rise with altitude). Also, when you are trekking, you might need hot showers, which cost you around NPR 200–500 per shower. As you know, the mountain areas are not developed with infrastructure, so you will need to pay for charging your device as well, which will be NPR 100–300 per charge. If you are planning to use Wifi, which is slower and still unreliable, it costs you around NPR 200–500.
When you are starting your trek, it's important for you to get good gear so that you can complete your Annapurna circuit with Tilicho Lake trek easily. You can rent or buy the trekking items from the different trekking shops in Kathmandu. The Sleeping bag (–10°C to –20°C) costs NPR 150–300/day or US$60–$120 to buy a budget model. Also, if you are trekking with the agency, they provide the sleeping bag as a complimentary. The down jackets cost around NPR 150–300/day, and Trekking poles cost NPR 100/day. Misc. (gloves, headlamp, power bank) costs US$30–$120 if buying budget options. The gears and equipment, other than these, you will need to buy only, as the clothes cannot be rented.
When you are trekking on the Annapurna circuit and the Tilicho lake, it's important for you to get travel insurance as well. You will need Travel insurance with high-altitude trekking & helicopter evacuation (to 5,500m+): US$100–$200 for ~2–3 weeks (varies by nationality/insurer). Also, you will need the visa, which costs you around US$30 for 15 days 30, 30 days 50, 90 days 125 (check current fees before arrival).
When you are doing the trek, it's important for you to know about the Miscellaneous / Hidden Extras costs as well, so that you can plan your budget efficiently.

The cost is around 1000 NPRs, but it's not suggested, as you will have an uncomfortable ride through bumpy roads, the bus will be crowded, and it may affect your experience.
If you are in Pokhara, you can rent a vehicle from us to get to Besi Sahar, or you can catch the bus from Prithvi Chowk. Every day, a bus leaves from there. The distance from Pokhara is less than that of Kathmandu, which can be reached in 4 to 5 hours by highway while enjoying the magnificent scenery.
The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) are required for the Annapurna Circuit, including the Tilicho Lake trek.
These permits can be obtained at the Tourism Board's office in Thamel, Kathmandu. Alternatively, you can apply online through the National Trust Nature Conservation website. If you begin your journey in Pokhara, you can also obtain these permits from the Tourism Board office near Phewa Lake.
The permit costs 30 USD for ACAP and 30 USD for TIMS. If you don't want to seek permits on your own, you can choose the Annapurna Circuit trek package, including the Tilicho Lake Trek. The permits will be included in the package, improving your trek experience and eliminating the need for you to deal with them yourself.

The Annapurna Circuit is well-trodden, but with side trips like Tilicho Lake and the challenging Thorong La Pass (5,416 m), the trail can get confusing or dangerous in bad weather. A guide knows alternate routes, safe timings, and how to handle emergencies like altitude sickness.

If you are trekking on the Annapurna circuit and including Tilicho Lake as a side trip, you will need to be aware of some of the difficulties and challenges, such as:
You will need to be aware of the High altitude as you will be crossing the Thorong La Pass (5,416 m) and visiting Tilicho Lake (4,919 m), which pose risks of altitude sickness if acclimatization is ignored.
As you know, the Annapurna region lies above the clouds due to its altitude, and the mountain's weather is not always predictable, so you will need to prepare according to it. You can witness Sudden changes which will bring snow, freezing nights, or strong winds, especially at higher elevations.
Another difficulty you will encounter is the long trekking hours, as you will be trekking 6 to 8 hours daily to reach from one destination to another. During the trek, you will often walk on steep ascents and descents that test endurance.
As you know, the Annapurna circuit and the Tilicho lake lie in the mountains, and to reach these beautiful destinations, you will need to encounter steep, rocky, and prone to landslides areas, making them tough and sometimes risky as well, but worth it.
When you are trekking in the Annapurna circuit, you will see that the lower regions have enough accommodations, but as you trek higher, the accommodation options start to be fewer. Higher-altitude teahouses are basic, crowded in peak season, and may lack heating or hot showers.
Foods and supplies in the Annapurna region are delicious, and the local foods are healthy for the trekkers. But as you ascend, you will see that food options are fewer and often repetitive because the supplies of the foods on the higher altitude become less, and as you ascend it becomes more expensive as well.
Whether the Annapurna circuit with Tilicho Lake trek is suitable for you or not depends upon the Fitness & Physical Readiness, Altitude & Acclimatization, Trekking Experience, Time Commitment, Season & Weather, Budget & Comfort Level, Motivation & Trekking Style.
When you are doing the Annapurna circuit with Tilicho Lake, you must be physically fit and ready to face the long walking days of 6 to 9 hours. You will need to be ready to walk up and descend on the rocky and steep paths. If you think you can handle sustained hikes and are willing to train (cardio, leg strength, endurance) before the trek, it's suitable for you.
Not ideal if: you have significant knee, ankle, or heart issues and cannot walk consecutive long days.
The Altitude & Acclimatization are the biggest concerns during the Annapurna circuit trek. AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is the biggest concern, especially at Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Phedi and the Thorong La Pass as well. If you are willing to follow acclimatization guidelines (rest days, slow pace, hydration, possibly Diamox).
Not suitable if: you’re very sensitive to altitude and prefer low-altitude treks.
If you want to do this trek with any prior experience, that means you will need to prepare yourself more than the other experienced trekkers. If you enjoy trekking challenges, don’t mind some rough sections, and want a mix of adventure and scenery, this is the trip for you.
Not suitable if: you want short, easy walks with luxury lodges throughout.
Time commitment is another reason to know if this trek is for you or not, as you will be trekking for up to 11 to 18 days every day to complete your trek. If you can, you commit ~2–3 weeks in Nepal, then it's perfect for you.
Not suitable if: you only have 7–10 days (in that case, you might prefer Annapurna Base Camp or Mardi Himal).
Another main role in enjoying this trek is the season and weather. As if you trek in seasons, it gives you more to experience than the off-season. If you can complete this trek in spring or autumn, it's perfect for you.
Not suitable if: you dislike cold or rainy/unstable weather.
When you are trekking in the Annapurna circuit, you will need to prepare for the budget as well. You can expect US$1,200–$1,800 for a safe, balanced trip (with guide/porter, permits, jeeps, meals, teahouses). Also, coming to the comfort levels, Teahouses are comfortable but basic, with shared bathrooms, limited hot showers, and simple meals.
Not suitable if: you require luxury hotels and constant comfort.
Whether you can complete the Annapurna circuit with the Tilicho lake trek or not, it depends on the Motivation and Trekking Style as well. If you want both cultural immersion (Tamang, Gurung, Thakali villages) and dramatic Himalayan scenery, if you crave adventure with an extra challenge (Tilicho Lake), if you prefer a trek that is less crowded than Everest Base Camp but still well-supported with teahouses, then this trek is perfect for you.
Not suitable if: you prefer shorter, easy treks, don’t enjoy being off-the-grid (Wi-Fi and charging are expensive/unreliable), and you have very limited time in Nepal.
