Gosainkunda Lake

Gosainkunda Lake, nestled in the Langtang National Park of Nepal, is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in the country. Located at an altitude of 4,380 meters (14,370 feet), this pristine alpine lake attracts trekkers, nature enthusiasts, and pilgrims alike. The lake is deeply associated with Lord Shiva, and according to Hindu mythology, it is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva meditated after swallowing poison during the churning of the ocean. The tranquil surroundings and the spectacular Himalayan views make Gosainkunda a must-visit destination for those seeking both spiritual solace and adventure.

How to Get There

Gosainkunda Lake is located in the northern part of Nepal and can be accessed through various trekking routes. While trekking is the most common way to reach the lake, there are also alternative ways to make the journey easier. The trek offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and spiritual significance.

Options to Get There

Via Langtang Trek

The Langtang region offers a beautiful and relatively easy trekking route to Gosainkunda Lake. From Kathmandu, you will drive to Syabrubesi, the starting point of the Langtang trek. The trek then takes you through Langtang Valley before heading up to Gosainkunda. The route offers breathtaking views of the Langtang range and gives trekkers a chance to experience local Tamang culture.

Via Chisapani

Starting from Sundarijal, a short drive from Kathmandu, trekkers can take the route via Chisapani. The trek passes through dense forests, small villages, and terraced farmlands, leading to the high-altitude lake. Chisapani is a popular stop for trekkers and offers a glimpse into the local lifestyle before heading up towards Gosainkunda.

Via Helambu

Helambu, known for its beautiful landscapes and ethnic culture, is another starting point for those heading to Gosainkunda. From the village of Melamchi Pul Bazaar, trekkers can follow the Helambu trek to reach Gosainkunda. This route passes through serene forests, small villages, and beautiful meadows. It is considered a moderate trekking option with impressive views of the mountains.

Helicopter Ride to Langtang

For those who prefer a quicker, more convenient way to reach Gosainkunda via helicopter ride is an option. Helicopter tours from Kathmandu or the surrounding areas offer a scenic, yet rapid, journey to Gosainkunda Lake. Cultural Beliefs about Lord Shiva

Gosainkunda is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, with a deep cultural and spiritual significance. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva created the lake when he struck the ground with his trident to extract water for his consumption after he consumed the poison during the churning of the ocean. Hindus believe that taking a dip in the lake during the full moon of August washes away sins and brings blessings.

The lake and its surrounding area are also home to many shrines and temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The unique religious connection makes it an important pilgrimage site, attracting devotees from all over Nepal and beyond.

Popular Festivals in Gosainkunda

The major festival celebrated at Gosainkunda is Janai Purnima, which occurs during the full moon in August. During this time, thousands of pilgrims from different parts of Nepal trek to the lake to take a holy dip and perform religious rituals. This is a significant occasion where devotees renew their sacred Janai (a religious thread worn by Hindus) and offer prayers to Lord Shiva. Another festival is Shivaratri, dedicated to Lord Shiva, which also attracts pilgrims to Gosainkunda, though in a more subdued manner compared to Janai Purnima.

Permits

Travelers intending to trek to Gosainkunda Lake must secure two essential permits:

  1. Langtang National Park Permit – This permit is required for trekkers entering the Langtang National Park. The fee is used for the conservation and protection of the park's flora and fauna.

  2. TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) Card – The TIMS card is necessary for all trekkers in Nepal, and it helps ensure the safety and security of tourists during their treks.

Both permits can be obtained in Kathmandu at the Nepal Tourism Board or through registered trekking agencies.

Vehicle Booking

For those traveling by road, vehicles to the starting points of the trek (Syabrubesi, Sundarijal, or Melamchi Pul Bazaar) can be booked from Kathmandu. Several travel agencies provide bus or jeep services for groups, and private vehicle bookings are also available for a more comfortable and flexible journey. Booking a vehicle for Gosainkunda in advance is recommended during peak seasons to secure your transportation.
