Mount Manaslu

Mt. Manaslu is a beautiful peak 8000 meters peak inside the Manaslu Conservation Area of the Gorkha-Manang district. Mt. Manaslu Peak is located at an altitude of 8,163 meters (26,781 ft) above sea level, which is the 8th highest mountain in the world. It lies at Latitude: 28° 32’ 58” N, Longitude: 84° 33’ 43” E. The Mount Manaslu ranges fall in the Mansiri Himalayan ranges of Nepal, where Mount Manaslu is often known as the mountain of spirit, and it is the sacred mountain for the local people living in the Manaslu region. It is located between Annapurna (the 10th highest mountain, 8,091 meters) to the west and Ganesh Himal (peaks reaching above 7,000 meters) to the east.

Climbing History of Mount Manaslu

The first attempts to ascend Mount Manaslu were made in 1950 when a Japanese survey party had mapped the area. Japanese mountaineers were captivated by the mountain and made some serious attempts over the following years. Between 1953 and 1954, expeditions reached high altitudes but were driven back by deep snow and unstable avalanches. Their perseverance made way for the first successful climb.

The First Successful Climb 1956

On 9 May 1956, a Japanese expedition finally conquered Mount Manaslu. Japanese mountaineer Toshio Imanishi and Nepalese Sherpa climber Gyalzen Norbu reached the summit via the northeast face. This success was one of the largest achievements in Japanese alpinism and also Himalayan exploration as a whole. The ascent was remarkably challenging due to high elevations, poor weather conditions, and thick snow. Despite this, the thorough planning of the expedition and its cooperation paid off.
