Lukla airport is named after the two brave men Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norway Sherpa who were first people to climb the world’s highest peak Everest in 1953. The airport was assembled in 1964 and come to operation in 1971. This airport is also considered among world's top 10 dangerous airport because it has the summarized runaway. It’s about 572 meters (1,729 feets) long and inclined up from the altitude of 2780 to 2880m with an 11.7% gradient.
To get there in Lukla you can take a direct flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Since, the flights are easier and in less time you will easily get there. The flight from Lukla will take approximately 30 to 35 mins. Another option is that you can take a flight or drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap and from Ramechhap to Manthali. Another optoin is Driving to Jiri of Dolakha or Jeep to Phera of Solukhumbu and trek to Lukla. While taking a jeep, you will get to encounter the natural beauty from your window seat. You may also take the Helicopter option for your journey to Lukla. It is also a very convenient option.
Lukla is Connected with world by only one direct means of transport that is Kathmandu to Lukla flight. Small, 14 to 19-seater Short Takeoff and Landing (Dornier Do 228, Twin Otter, and Let L-410)aircraft are typically used for Kathmandu to Lukla Flights. If you want to book a flight to Lukla you must book at least a month ahead. As there are limited flights and high tourist volume to Everest region, max flights are booked early. The cost of one way Kathmandu to Lukla flight is around USD 200 which fluctuates depending upon the trekking season.
During peak season the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla are rerouted to Manthali. So, there will be Manthali to Lukla flight on Autumn and spring seasons. You can book a private jeep to Phera from Kathmandu and start you trekking towards Bupsa to Lukla in 2 to 3 days. Lukla, located in the Khumbu region of Nepal, is home primarily to the Sherpa community and celebrates a mix of Buddhist, Sherpa, and some Hindu festivals. One of the most significant festivals in the region is Mani Rimdu, a vibrant Tibetan Buddhist celebration held in monasteries such as Tengboche, Chiwong, and Thame. Taking place in October or November, it features sacred masked dances, chants, and rituals symbolizing the triumph of Buddhism over ancient Bon traditions. Another major festival is Lhosar, the Tibetan New Year, celebrated in February or March.
During Lhosar, Sherpa families come together to perform traditional dances, wear cultural attire, and prepare special foods to mark the beginning of the New Year. Dumje is a unique Sherpa festival observed in June, honoring Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the spiritual figure credited with spreading Buddhism in the Himalayas. This festival includes religious ceremonies, communal gatherings, and traditional dancing.
While Lukla is predominantly Buddhist, some Hindu festivals, such as Dashain and Tihar, are also celebrated by residents or observed in nearby lower-altitude communities. These festivals bring people together through family gatherings, feasting, and religious rituals, adding to the rich cultural tapestry of life in Lukla.
Lukla, offers stunning views of several prominent Himalayan peaks, although Mount Everest itself is not visible from the town. One of the most striking mountains visible from Lukla is Kongde Ri, which rises dramatically to the west and forms a stunning backdrop to the landscape with its rugged ridges and sharp peaks. To the northeast, the elegant Kusum Kanguru stands tall, known for its complex structure and technical climbing routes.
Another significant peak in the distance is Numbur, a sacred mountain revered by local communities, located to the southwest. While Thamserku is not visible directly from Lukla, it becomes a dominant sight just a short distance into the trek toward Phakding and Namche Bazaar. On clear days, Mera Peak, one of Nepal’s highest trekking peaks, can also be seen faintly toward the southeast. These peaks, though not the tallest in the region, create a breathtaking setting for Lukla and mark the beginning of the iconic Himalayan trekking experience.
